Celtic Cross
10 cardsFor complex situations that need to be examined from every angle
About This Spread
The Celtic Cross is the most widely recognized tarot spread in the world and arguably the most powerful. Ten cards arranged in a specific cross-and-staff formation examine a question from virtually every angle: the present and the opposing force, the past and the near future, what's conscious and what's subconscious, how you see yourself and how the external world is affecting you, the emotional stakes you're carrying, and where it all appears to be heading.
The spread divides into two sections. The first six cards form the Cross — the center of the reading. Cards one and two establish the core situation and what's crossing it. Cards three through six fill in the surrounding context: the subconscious root below, the recent past on the left, the conscious aspiration above, the near future on the right. These six cards together create a remarkably complete picture of the situation as it currently exists.
The remaining four cards form the Staff — placed vertically to the right of the Cross. They provide the wider frame: your own attitude toward the situation, the external influences at play, the emotional complexity of your hopes and fears, and finally the Outcome at the top. The Outcome card is the most important card to read carefully and humbly: it summarizes the trajectory suggested by everything before it, which means it is only as accurate as your understanding of all nine preceding cards.
The Celtic Cross requires more than knowledge of individual card meanings — it requires practice reading cards *in relationship to each other*. Position seven (Your Attitude) illuminated by what position three (Foundation) revealed is a different reading than position seven read in isolation. The full power of this spread reveals itself when the cards are read as a single coherent argument rather than ten separate statements.
Reserve this spread for situations with real weight: significant life decisions, long-standing complex problems, or any question that has resisted simpler spreads. It's too rich for simple questions and exactly right for the ones that genuinely need everything it offers.
Card Positions
- 1
Present Situation
The central energy of the situation right now — the heart of the matter, the core of what you're navigating. This card establishes what everything else in the reading orbits.
- 2
The Challenge
The card placed across the Present — the force, dynamic, or obstacle that is most directly crossing or complicating the central situation. This card is neither positive nor negative by position; it simply names what's in the way.
- 3
Foundation
The subconscious root of the situation — the underlying motivation, unexamined belief, or deep influence that shaped how things have become what they are. What's operating beneath awareness.
- 4
Recent Past
The energy or event that has just passed — the influence that is fading but still relevant. What led directly to the present situation.
- 5
Crown
Your conscious intention or highest aspiration in this situation — what you're hoping for, striving toward, or what represents the best possible resolution from your current perspective.
- 6
Near Future
The energy moving toward you — what is likely to emerge or develop in the near term as a result of the current dynamics at play.
- 7
Your Attitude
How you are showing up in this situation — your self-perception, the stance you're taking, and how your own inner narrative is influencing your experience of what's happening.
- 8
External Influences
The people, environment, or circumstances outside of you that are affecting this situation — what others think, the social or material context, the forces in play that you didn't originate.
- 9
Hopes and Fears
The emotional undercurrent — what you most deeply hope for and what you most deeply fear, which are often two faces of the same feeling. This card illuminates the emotional stakes beneath the situation.
- 10
Outcome
The direction all the energies in this reading are pointing toward — the likely result if current forces continue on their present path. This is the most context-dependent card in the spread: it is shaped by every other card that precedes it.
When to Use This Spread
- ✦ Complex situations with multiple competing factors you need to understand fully
- ✦ Major life decisions or turning points that deserve thorough exploration
- ✦ Long-standing issues where simpler spreads haven't provided sufficient clarity
- ✦ When you want to understand a situation from every angle simultaneously
How to Read It
Lay out the Cross first: card one face up in the center, card two placed horizontally across it. Then place cards three (below), four (left), five (above), six (right) around the center pair. Finally, build the Staff to the right: card seven at the bottom, eight above it, nine above that, ten at the top. Read the Cross first to establish the full shape of the present situation, then use the Staff to understand the personal, external, and outcome dimensions. Cards that seem contradictory often contain the most important insight — sit with the tension before resolving it.
