Three Card Spread (Situation-Advice-Outcome)

3 cards

When you need clear, practical advice on what to do next

About This Spread

While the Past-Present-Future spread tracks a situation across time, the Situation-Advice-Outcome spread moves through it from the inside out — starting with the real nature of the problem, moving to what to do about it, and landing on what becomes possible as a result. It's the action-oriented sibling of the time-based three-card layout.

The Situation card is doing more than simply confirming what you already know. This position tends to cut through the surface presentation of a problem and reflect its actual core energy. If you're struggling with a work situation, for example, the Situation card might bypass 'there's too much to do' and land instead on 'you haven't communicated your real needs' — the actual dynamic beneath the workload. Pay attention to what surprises you here.

The Advice card is the practical heart of this spread. It speaks directly to the question of what to do, how to approach this, or what attitude to bring. It's worth sitting with this card longer than feels comfortable — tarot advice can be counterintuitive, and the most valuable counsel is sometimes the one that resists your first impulse.

The Outcome card is most useful when read conditionally: this is what becomes possible *if you take the advice*. This framing keeps it action-connected and prevents the card from feeling like a passive prediction.

Card Positions

  1. 1

    The Situation

The core energy or root dynamic beneath the surface of what you're dealing with — not just the visible facts, but the deeper pattern at play. This card often reveals the real reason things feel the way they do.

  2. 2

    The Advice

The attitude, approach, or action that will serve you best in this situation right now. This is the card's practical counsel — what to do, how to show up, or where to redirect your energy.

  3. 3

    The Outcome

What becomes possible when the advice is genuinely taken — or the probable result if the current dynamic continues unchanged. This card is most useful when read in direct relationship to the Advice card.

When to Use This Spread

  • When you need practical guidance rather than a timeline
  • Decision points where you know something needs to change but aren't sure what
  • Problem-solving — you want to understand the real issue and what to do about it
  • Any situation where 'what should I do right now?' is the core question

How to Read It

Draw three cards and lay them left to right: Situation, Advice, Outcome. Start with the Situation card to identify the core dynamic at play — let it reframe the question if it wants to. Then read the Advice card as a direct response: what is this card actually asking you to do or embody? Finally, connect the Outcome card to the Advice: not 'what will happen' but 'what becomes possible when I follow this counsel.'
