Three Card Spread (Past-Present-Future)

3 cards

When you want to see a situation's past, present, and likely direction

About This Spread

The Three-Card Past-Present-Future spread is one of the most widely used tarot layouts in the world, and with good reason: it turns any question into a narrative. Three cards, three moments in time, one coherent story that illuminates how you got here and where you seem to be heading.

What makes this spread powerful is the instruction to read the three cards as a single arc rather than three separate answers. The Past card explains the Present, and the Present card contextualizes the Future. When the cards are read this way — as a story rather than three independent data points — the connections between them often reveal something more useful than any individual card could say alone.

One important note on the Future card: tarot does not deal in fixed outcomes. The third card shows you where the current energies are pointing, which is genuinely valuable — but it's the trajectory of the present moment, not a locked-in result. If the Future card is difficult, it's an invitation to change something now. If it's promising, it's an encouragement to keep going. It's always conditional.

This spread works across every topic — love, career, finances, health, any relationship — and it works equally well when you have no specific question but simply want to understand the overall arc of what you're living through right now.

Card Positions

  1. 1

    Past

The energy, event, or influence that shaped the current situation — not necessarily the distant past, but the recent story that led you here. This card provides context: the root of what you're now experiencing.

  2. 2

    Present

Where you stand right now — the core energy of this moment, the central dynamic at play. This card reflects the heart of the situation as it actually is today.

  3. 3

    Future

The direction this situation is likely to move if current energies continue. This is a probable outcome, not a fixed destiny — it shifts as your choices and awareness shift. Think of it as the thread you're currently pulling, not the end of the story.

When to Use This Spread

  • Understanding how a current situation developed and where it's heading
  • Reading the overall arc of a relationship, project, or life chapter
  • When you want more context than a One Card pull provides
  • Any topic — this is the most versatile multi-card spread in tarot

How to Read It

Draw three cards and place them left to right: Past, Present, Future. Begin by reading each card individually, then step back and read them as a single narrative. Notice how the Past card sets up the Present, and how the Present card informs what the Future card is pointing toward. The connections and contrasts between them are often where the real insight lives.
